These days everything moves at such a fast pace that we seldom slow down enough to think about the things that really matter. How many families still sit down around a dinner table at least once a week? How many kids have their own televisions in their bedrooms and spend more time with the ‘box’ than with their own siblings or parents?
It may seem a bit old fashioned, but ‘family values’ still goes a long way towards helping children grow up to be healthy balanced individuals. Parents won’t be around forever and before we know it, the children will have left the nest, so now is the time to do things together and enjoy each other’s company.
We’ve come up with a few ideas for things to do as a family and we would really love it if you could add some of your own favourite activities to this list:
1. Go ten-pin bowling
2. Discover a new countryside walk (see http://www.derbyshirewildlifetrust.org.uk and http://www.nottinghamshirewildlife.org.uk/nature-reserves for some great walks around Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire)
3. Bake cupcakes and decorate them
4. Put together a family scrapbook
5. Learn a new sport, such as tennis together
6. Play a board game. Monopoly and Cluedo are still as popular as ever.
7. Do something creative, like clay modelling
8. Pitch in together with the gardening – what seems like a chore to adults is often much more fun for the kids – and looking after their own patch might even teach them some responsibility.
Perhaps you’d like to arrange a special family picnic, but haven’t got the time to get everything together? We can put together a picnic hamper for your group and will even arrive early to set everything out for you, so you can have one of the best spots.
Concerts in the park are a firm favourite for getting friends and family together outdoors to enjoy some good food and wine, or perhaps a glass of Pimms, along with a little culture. We can help you make this year the most memorable one yet. The Darley Park annual concert in Derby will be on 6 September this year, so there’s plenty of time, but planning ahead always helps things go more smoothly.
If you know of any other family friendly outdoor events around the Midlands, please do share it with us here.
